In this paper, we seek to determine the data remnants from the use of two popular Windows Store application software for instant messaging, namely Facebook and Skype on a Windows 8.1 client machine. The forensic examination of IM apps for modern Windows 8.1 (or later) has been largely unexplored, as the platform is relatively new. However, the interactive and instant nature of these applications (apps) made them an attractive choice for malicious cyber activities such as phishing. This is severely limiting users but at the same time encouraging them to create Microsoft accounts.Instant messaging (IM) has changed the way people communicate with each other. Skype will only have one sign-in method which will be through a Microsoft account. Why would Microsoft want to handicap the app? This move isn’t going to help Skype’s user base which has dwindled quite a lot in recent times. While Skype is a reliable and popular app it has been replaced over time by newer apps with more features. However, this announcement to remove this feature seems a bit odd. If you’re using an older version of Skype, you’re probably not going to be affected by this and that’s an easy way around it for a while. The new authentication option will be through a Microsoft account. Could this be a tactic to get more users to use Microsoft accounts? This feature will cease to exist on the 10th of January. From January onwards, you will no longer be able to use your Facebook credentials and a sign in option on Skype. This will officially be implemented in January. Microsoft has decided to take remove Facebook as a login option for Skype. Well, now there’s more news surround Skype. Recently, it was temporarily banned in China and even removed from the Apple Store. The popular messaging application, Skype, is always undergoing many changes.
